Professional:
Gary Applebaum, M.D. is a nationally recognized expert in providing medical care and managing health care systems. He has been responsible for the care of over 20,000 seniors in 7 states. Additionally, he has been called upon by the government to provide advice and Congressional testimony in the field.
Dr. Applebaum has been recognized for his excellence as a physician by being named the Geriatrics Clinician of the Year by the American Geriatrics Society, the major professional organization of doctors who care for seniors.
In recent years he was the driving force behind two major innovations that he is eager to bring to the Nation as a Member of Congress.
All of Dr. Applebaum’s patients have computerized medical records. Their records are totally legible and fully list their allergies, medical history, medications and all of their laboratory tests and visit notes. These records can be accessed 24 hours a day wherever the patient is including emergency rooms, consultants’ offices or by their own doctor in his home, at conferences etc.
Because of electronic records care is better coordinated and safer. Tests are not duplicated and physicians can search the records for potential medication interactions and gain assistance from the records by comparing the patient’s illness with new medical techniques and treatments. Clearly the future of medicine will involve all Americans having electronic records but at present the practices managed by Dr. Applebaum are in the minority and he will be a driving force in Congress to get this done.
Dr Applebaum recognized the importance of patients getting care without delay and having office visits with their doctors that were long enough to have all of their issues addressed. He found that when his physicians invested in this kind of care the patients were more satisfied, had fewer hospitalizations and overall had less health care expenses. Working with the leadership of Medicare, Erickson was given the opportunity to accept financial responsibility for the care of residents who signed up for a unique insurance plan. Under this plan the patients and providers benefit when money is saved because superb care keeps them healthy. He will be a driving force in Congress to provide this quality of medical care to all Americans.
In addition to his leadership of a vast health care system, Dr Applebaum was also a member of an executive team that managed a national business with 8000 employees and 3 billion dollars of owned or managed real estate. He frequently worked with government leaders, CEOs, University Presidents and many other prominent people. Clearly he is superbly qualified to manage at the national level in the House of Representatives. back to top
